Pratarmė

Pristatome kasmetinį Vilniaus universiteto Archeologijos katedros mokslinių straipsnių leidinį Archaeologia Lituana 21.

Vilniaus universiteto Istorijos fakulteto Archeologijos katedra yra viena iš pagrindinių Lietuvos archeologijos mokslo institucijų ir vienintelė šalyje, rengianti visų trijų studijų pakopų (bakalauro, magistro ir doktorantūros) archeologijos specialistus. 2017 m.

Archaeologia Lituana 21 skirtas 2019 m. vykusiai 10-ajai Jono Puzino konferencijai „Investigating Bones: Diet, Health, Environment in the Baltic Region“.

Preface

We present the annual publication of scientific articles, Archaeologia Lituana 21, of the Department of Archaeology of Vilnius University.

The Department of Archaeology of the Faculty of History of Vilnius University is one of the main scientific institutions of archeology in Lithuania and the only one in the country that trains archeology specialists in all three study degrees – bachelor, master and doctoral. The Faculty of History has established, in 2017, and actively operates the Bioarchaeology Research Center, where students carry out research work and acquire skills in the field of bioarchaeology. Since 1996 the department has been organizing a continuous international conference on archeology in the memory of the archaeologist Jonas Puzinas. Jonas Puzinas (1905–1978) was a Lithuanian archaeologist and a specialist on the prehistory of Lithuania. He belonged to the first generation of Lithuanian scholars who matured in independent Lithuania (1918–1940) and he was the first scientifically trained archaeologist in Lithuania, who laid the foundations, including some of the basic terminology and periodization, for future archaeological studies. Therefore, traditionally in every two years, the publication Archaeologia Lituana is dedicated to the articles prepared on the basis of reports presented in the international scientific conferences Readings of Jonas Puzinas. Thus, Archaeologia Lituana 19 was dedicated to the hillforts with the articles presented during the conference “Hillforts. From Emergence to the Present Day“ (“Piliakalniai. Nuo atsiradimo iki šių dienų“) in 2017. And Archaeologia Lituana 20 ranged from the Stone Age ancient settlement of Nida to the most famous Lithuanian medieval archeological complex – Kernavė hillforts, presenting the fields from the anthropological research to monument protection. Such a diversity of archeological and anthropological research occurs naturally, because the pedagogical and scientific activities of the staff of the department, researched topics, scientific and commissioned archeological research projects cover various periods and topics.

Archaeologia Lituana 21 is dedicated to the 10th Conference of Jonas Puzinas – “Investigating Bones: Diet, Health, Environment in the Baltic Region”. Organization and hosting of the conference, collecting anthropological and paleozoological scientific articles published in this publication, communication with the authors and the publishing house – all these works were done by the excellent researchers and colleagues dr. Justina Kazokaitė and dr. Giedrė Piličiauskienė. Thank both of you for such a great, meticulous and excellent job.

As always, the publication has a review section, where two books are reviewed: the first one is “Baltic Hillforts” published by two famous Lithuanian hillforts and Lithuanian medieval archeology researchers Gintautas Zabiela and Manvydas Vitkūnas; and the second one is a a prominent research of hillforts – “Bilioniai Hillfort: New Facts on Samogitian (Žemaitija) History” (“Bilionių piliakalnis – nauji Žemaitijos istorijos faktai”). Reviews of scholarly works, especially of such important books that discuss the hillforts of the entire vast Baltic population region, or the historical and archeological material of the Bilioniai hillforts, are necessary and very important, but they clearly reflect only the opinion of the reviewers. The editorial board always encourages scientific discussion and creates the conditions for scientific controversy. The publication also contains a chronicle of the works of the year 2020 by the staff and doctoral students of the Department of Archeology of Vilnius University.

We hope that the publication Archaeologia Lituana 21 will be useful and encourage other colleagues to submit their research to our journal.
