This collected volume, based on papers delivered at the international scholarly conference held at Vilnius University on 7–8 November 2013 to mark the 425th anniversary of the adoption of the Third Lithuanian Statute of 1588, brings together contributions by Lithuanian and international historians. Rather than focusing primarily on the content of the Statute itself, the authors examine issues of legal formation, functioning, and codification traditions in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the role of law in various spheres of noble society, and its significance in relations with the Kingdom of Poland and during the era of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Drawing on modern methodological approaches, the authors’ insights enrich Statute studies and deepen contemporary historiographical perspectives on the sociopolitical and cultural development of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
