Abstract

The article analyses the definition of femicide, different types of it, causality and legal norms establishing criminal liability for the murder of a woman in Lithuania. Furthermore, the article presents the analysis of official statistical data showing the frequency of femicide in Lithuania. As a result, it was concluded that an essencial aspect of femicide is the gender-based killing of a woman. In addition, the Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania does not contain a special legal norm providing for criminal liability for femicide. The analysis of official statistical data revealed that femicide is evident in respect of women killed by domestic perpetrators. Also, the research indicated that domestic femicide is considered to be a consequence of domestic violence and correlates with gender stereotypes.
