Abstract

The article analyses archaeological research conducted between 1960 and 2023 in the Architectural Ensemble of Vilnius University. It has been observed that archaeological information usually remains excluded from academic works on the history of Vilnius University. This work presents systematic data derived from a comprehensive analysis of sources covering Vilnius University archaeological research. The primary objective of this study is to provide a detailed analysis of the condition of the cultural layers, their distribution across the territory of Vilnius University architectural complex, and the dating of these layers. The results of these archaeological investigations and the research methodology used at the time were evaluated from a historical and heritage conservation perspective, while using legislation, historical and architectural research, along with historiographical material. The data obtained during the research provided information about the development of a specific area of the old town, specifically, from the settlement, one of the first cemeteries in Vilnius, to the scientific institution (VU Complex) and its transformation during different historical periods.
