Author Guidelines
General requirements
(updated: 2017-04-24)
1. The journal publishes works in Lithuanian, Latvian, English, German, French, and Russian. In addition to the article, an abstract (up to 1,500 characters) and keywords must be provided. If the article is written in Lithuanian, Latvian, German, French or Russian, the title, abstract and keywords should be provided also in English.
2. The recommended length for submissions of articles is up to 20 pages (approximately 36,000 characters), book reviews up to 12 pages (approximately 22,000 characters), and information up to 6 pages (approximately 11,000 characters). Longer works are published in special circumstances by decision of the editors.
3. The articles are to be submitted to the editorial board through the electronic publishing system (http://www.baltistica.lt).
4. In addition to the abstract at the beginning of the article, it is recommended to provide a more extensive summary in a different language (up to 4000 characters) at the end of the article. The summary may briefly discuss the content of the article and present the main research findings. If the article is written in Lithuanian or Latvian, it is followed by a summary in English, German, French or Russian; articles in other than the Baltic languages may be followed by a Lithuanian or Latvian summary.
5. The editorial board undertakes editing of abstracts and summaries written in Lithuanian and English as well as translation of abstracts and summaries into Lithuanian from Latvian, English, German, French or Russian. The authors bear full responsibility for the quality of the language of the article.
6. If the article is not in the author‘s native language, the author must ensure that the text is edited by a native speaker editor prior to submission for publication.
7. The article must be in an MS Word format (.doc or .docx) that runs on the Windows operating system.
8. Palemonas font is to be used. The font, which was created specially for the needs of researchers in Lithuanian linguistics, Baltic linguistics and Indo-European linguistics, can be downloaded from the website of the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language (http://www.vlkk.lt/media/public/file/Palemonas/Palemonas-3.1.zip). In cases where other non-standard fonts are used, the font files and the text file are to be sent in .pdf format as a supplementary file to the article.
9. The list of references and bibliographical references in the text should be in Latin characters. Bibliographical references to works published in Cyrillic should be transliterated according to the international system of scientific transliteration of Cyrillic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_transliteration_of_Cyrillic). If the article is written in Russian, both variants of a list of references may be provided (in Cyrillic and transliterated).
10. Since the submitted text file will be given to anonymous reviewers, neither the author’s name nor references to the authorship of the article should be present in the text (for example, “As I have stated earlier [Author 2008, pp. xxx]”, etc.). Please refer to Ensuring a Blind Peer Review.
11. The names of the author, contact details and other information should be provided separately when submitting the text file in the online submission system.
12. Illustrations must be adapted for computer printing and created using computer graphics tools. Since the journal is in black and white, such things as maps, diagrams, charts and other drawings can only be line drawings. If an area needs to be shaded, colours or half-tones should not be used but rather separate raster graphics. In special cases where point illustrations (for example, photos) are used, the resolution must be no smaller than 300 dpi. Illustrations must be provided in the suitable sections in the text file. If the illustrations are of high quality, they can be sent as a supplementary file. It is recommended to submit the entire article as a supplementary file in pdf format.
13. Other multimedia files no larger than 64 MB can be added as supplementary files, including: colour illustrations (with .jpg the recommended format), sound recordings (with .wav, .wma and .mp3 the recommended formats), and videos (with .wmv and .mpg the recommended formats). They will be available to readers in the web version of the journal.
Requirements for bibliography
The sources cited in the article must be shown according to the examples provided below concerning the bibliographic description. We recommend providing the literature and sources in footnotes or as a list at the end of the publication.
If the sources are shown as a list at the end of the publication:
- in citing sources within the text, please include the following in parentheses in the following order: the name(s) of the author, compiler(s) or editor(s), then the year and after a comma the page numbers; separate works should be separated with a semicolon, for example: (Petit 2004, 75-76; Mikulėnienė, Morkūnas 2005, 189; Ulvydas et al. 1976, 258);
- abbreviations can be used for publications, dictionaries and grammars that are cited often; a comma should be put before the page numbers after the abbreviation (for example, DLKG, 123); publications, the abbreviations of which are not in the list provided, must be included in the list of the publication’s literature or abbreviations;
- volumes of a multi-volume or ongoing work should be shown with Arabic numerals. A comma is not placed before the numeral (LKG 1, 356; LKŽ 19, 1024);
- if citing sources within the text, the last names of the authors, compilers or editors should have a space of 1.4 between each letter of the last name;
- there is no spacing for the last names in the list of sources;
- spaces are not used between the letters of abbreviations either in citations in the text or in the list of sources.
If sources are shown in footnotes:
- if citing a source for the first time, a complete bibliographic description of the work must be given;
- the last names of the authors, compilers or editors should use a spacing of 1.4 between each letter of the last name.
